Temperatures haven't been that bad thus far during the new year. When I think of cold weather, I have a tendancy to think of Christmas. It was Christmas of 1989 that I remember those temperatures around 3 degrees. My wife and I spent Christmas day in Middleton, just east of Memphis, then drove back to Huntsville, AL where we found a BIG MESS awaiting us.
We were renting a condominium from an indivdual and had brought to his attention the lack of insulation at that location. A water pipe had frozen over and burst during the extremely cold temperatures and our entire downstairs had been flooded out. Fortunately a neighbor noticed the water coming out from under our front door and turned the water off at our meter. It was a chore to clean up all the water damage. It also underscored the impact that such cold air can have on our homes.
Why do I mention this story? Because we have a cold Arctic blast heading our way next week. While we're not expecting single digits, it is possible that some in our viewing area may experience temperatures in the teens next Thursday night. So here's fair warning: Be prepated!
