We're just 11 days into December 2008 and this month is packing quite a punch! Except for three days, temperatures have been running below normal. And rainfall? Man oh man, have we seen rainfall! Our total December rain thus far is 4.33", with about 3.5" coming this past Tuesday.
If you've been watching the news today, then you know that an upper level low pressure system has brought rain and snow all the way from Houston to New Orleans. Now that system is moving across Mississippi into Alabama featuring mostly rain in the southeast. Most of the frozen precipitation is now situated from the Ohio Valley into the northeastern United States. While we weren't expecting any frozen precipitation locally with today's system, we're keeping a close eye on next week's weather pattern.
This is a little far out, but computer models are advertising a cold Arctic blast for early next week. With enough available moisture, it's possible that we could see an "ice event" on Tuesday. These forecasts gain more accuracy once we're with 24-48 hours, but it's cerainly something that bears watching over the weekend. As you know, this is Memphis and the weather can change at a moment's notice, especially during December. So, can we expect as White Christmas this year? Stay tuned.
